Subnautiq Analytical Field Illustration
SAFi — Subnautiq Analytical Field Illustration — is presented within the Subnautiq system as a visual layer for documenting field observations and the material associated with them.
Subnautiq's capture workflow is designed to preserve a distinction between what was captured, what the capture can establish, and what remains an observation or interpretation.
Contemporary photographs may be captured through an authenticated workflow using machine-recorded provenance. The resulting capture can retain information associated with the original media, including its capture context and authentication evidence. That information is then evaluated and bound to the appropriate Subnautiq Media record rather than being treated as an independent claim of historical truth.
From there, the record can be presented through a Canvas — a photographic presentation derived from the governed Registry and capture information. The Canvas is a presentation layer, not a replacement for the underlying record.
This distinction is important. Authentication of a contemporary capture does not, by itself, authenticate the historical identity, date, location, authorship, or significance of the subject being photographed. A photograph can be authenticated as a capture while the historical questions surrounding its subject remain open.
SAFi therefore does not exist to make an object or photograph appear more certain than the evidence permits. It provides a structured visual relationship between the field photograph, its available provenance, and the record to which it belongs.
The objective is simple: preserve the evidence, identify what is known, distinguish it from what is inferred, and leave a clear record for those who follow.
