Société de Subnautiq
Institutional Framework within Subnautiq
The Société de Subnautiq is the institutional layer of Subnautiq, established to provide continuity, stewardship, and structure around the work conducted through the Subnautiq system.
Subnautiq brings together field research, survey, photographic documentation, objects, historical material, and the records associated with them. The Société provides a framework through which this material can be organized and carried forward without separating it from the principles that govern its documentation.
The purpose is not to create authority where none exists. The Société does not turn an observation into a fact, nor does it determine historical significance simply by presenting something within the system.
Instead, it provides an institutional context for stewardship, preservation, documentation, and continuity.
Within the system, different forms of information retain their appropriate status. A photograph remains a photograph. A field observation remains an observation. A Registry record remains a governed record. Historical interpretations remain distinguishable from the evidence on which they are based.
This distinction allows Subnautiq to preserve material while remaining clear about what is known, what has been documented, what has been authenticated, and what remains unresolved.
The Société is therefore concerned with the care and continuity of the record rather than the manufacture of certainty.
Its role is to help ensure that the work can remain coherent as it grows — that records retain their relationships, provenance can remain visible, and the knowledge entrusted to the system can be preserved for those who follow.
We are stewards, not owners, of the knowledge, history, and heritage entrusted to our care, preserving them faithfully for those who follow.
