Sunlight Zone (0-660 ft)

Only 5% of the ocean is sunlit. Blue whale dive depth: 1,640 ft. Deepest free dive: 830 ft (Herbert Nitsch, 2012). 90% of marine life lives in this zone. Sunlight penetrates only 660 ft down.

Twilight Zone (660-3,300 ft)

No photosynthesis possible here. Giant squid territory (up to 3,300 ft). Sperm whales dive here for squid. 90% of bioluminescent life lives here. First living giant squid filmed: 3,000 ft (2012).

Midnight Zone (3,300-13,000 ft)

Complete darkness, no sunlight ever. Anglerfish use glowing lures to hunt. Over 1,000 species of bioluminescent fish. Titanic wreck: 12,467 ft. Deepest submarine wreck: USS Johnston at 21,180 ft.

Abyssal Zone (13,000-20,000 ft)

Abyssal plains cover 50% of Earth. German battleship Bismarck rests at 15,000 ft. Temperature near freezing (35-39ยฐF). Hydrothermal vents support unique life. Pressure: 5,000-10,000 psi.

Hadal Zone (20,000-36,070 ft)

Named for Hades, Greek underworld. Challenger Deep: 36,070 ft (10,994 m). 12 people walked on moon, only 7 reached Challenger Deep. Trieste (1960): First crewed dive to 35,797 ft. James Cameron (2012): Solo dive to 35,756 ft. Victor Vescovo (2019): Deepest dive at 35,856 ft. Life exists here - snailfish at 27,000 ft. Pressure: 16,000 psi (50 jumbo jets on thumb).
